Megrahi motives

[This is the heading over a letter from Tom Minogue published in today's edition of The Scotsman. It reads as follows:]

Like Tam Dalyell (Letters, 27 August), Dr Jim Swire believes Kenny MacAskill's decision was corrupted by self-interest and he is supporting an inexplicable verdict to protect some of his judges/prosecutors from criticism. [Note by RB: I have no recollection, and certainly no record, of Dr Swire having ever made such a crticism of Kenny MacAskill.] He may well be right in this.

Likewise Megrahi's inexplicable decision to abandon the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission appeal may have been the result of a nod and a wink from those dealing with his compassionate release and if so would have been welcomed by those in the justice establishment. If Megrahi had died waiting for his appeal to be heard there would have been an outcry that the Crown Office had procrastinated for years while this appellant's health faded.

And if Megrahi survived long enough to attend his appeal the prospect of Tony Gauci and his brother being called (from wherever they are now) to explain the millions of dollars gifted them by the US government would have been a disaster for Scotland's reputation for independent justice.

So many political factors have dictated events in the Megrahi saga, but for those who believe that MacAskill acted purely on compassionate grounds I would ask them to listen again to his monotone 20-minute statement to the Scottish Parliament.

Invoking the Almighty was pure political theatre pitched at the Bible Belt rather than his constituents in the Central Belt.

Abdelbaset al-Megrahi had no motive for an attack on PanAm-103 !

Mr. Megrahi have a clear subversive order for his visite in Malta on 20th-21st December 1988, under coded name of "Ahmed Khalifa Abdusamad". The subversive order have nothing to do with smuggle sth in a Bag on Air Malta flight KM-180 at Luqa Airport.
Air Malta KM-180 had provable to day not transported a "Bomb-Bag" to Frankfurt.

It was not an BP oil deal for Mr. Al-Megrahi's freedom !

Mr. al-Megrahi, drop the Appeal for your freedom, to prevent a Scottish Miscarriage of Justice with its immoral side effects and which would have exposed to the world the shortcomings of the Scottish judicial system.
That was the possibbly deal of the Scottish Justiciary with Mr. al-Megrahi...

  3. There's an argument that says people who dare spend £18 000 of taxpayers money on their own bookshelves should not be accusing anyone of corruption by self-interest. Or am I being shelfish?

    S-0072+Zeit, Zum Beispiel, Tray No. B-8238 = S-0072 + Z1159.
    B-0622; B-1898; B-4971; B-12244; B-11435; B-10852; B-6696;
    B-6559; B-6391; B-2377.

    Weitere Manipulationen :

Prod. No.0000074)

    (z.B. Prod. No. 0000079 und Prod. 0000080)

    Betrifft:
Bundeskriminalamt Untersuchungsbericht ST-33 - 068507/88 , Meckenheim, verantwortlicher Kommissar, Hans Jürgen Fuhl BKA.
    02. 07. 1990, HR: 2327, Seite 19 (Prod. 0000025 Kamp van Zeist)

BKA Bewertung: 5.1.4 original "BKA" Text:

    +++

    MEBO Ermittlungs-Resultat:

  7. Well know quite well the Crown's desire to bury Lockerbie, and really they haven't got a lot hide compared to MI5, the CIA and HW Bush. I wonder why don't simply say, we've been stitched up by the US for years let's get it all out.

Currently refrences to my theory are I can prove being suppressed by people in the States, I think from the CIA.

  8. I think the side swipe at Tam Dalyell is really quite unprnovoked

    ReplyDelete
  9. Charles. Dalyell upsets a lot of people. I like the guy. The Falklands conflict is an age ago yet the fate of the Belgrano is one which sticks in the minds of many of us. Thatcher (again!) was in charge. The Belgrano was outside of a 50 mile exclusion zone and heading even further from that zone when it was sunk. More than 300 people died. If anyone can giggle at that I'm disgusted personally. I was younger then but recall my horror. Some things should not be forgotten.

If Tam has applied the same approach to Lockerbie and the injustices there I am glad. I respect him. The people I worry about are those who say things like, "Oh well yes, but you know you can't be naive. Politicians need to do certain things and they can't do this, or that, or the next thing because there is a way to approach things and...........blah blah......." For me if all politicians were simply honest???? The world wouldn't be such a dangerous place! And those who go along with deception, double-standards and downright dishonesty are worse than the politicians who practise such things with their approval and who get their votes.

  10. It was a humorous comment at Dalyell's expense but only because he has let me down. He blemished a distinguished career by being caught red-handed milking the expenses. Tut tut...he even tried to waffle his way out of it.

  11. Blogiston. It doesn't change the Belgrano situation or the Lockerbie one, but I hope you enjoyed having your time of "humour". Tut, tut, indeed. Sit there and judge why don't you why the really big issues go right over your head.

  12. He's let you down has he Bloggy? How dare he, eh? £18,000 worth. Worth more, clearly, to you than the casualties of the Belgrano and the whole Lockerbie farce!!!!

Fine if that's your view. I'm coming from a different viewpoint and will stand by it as it is about justice. Hope your "humourous" standpoint" works for you. It really doesn't work for me as an onlooker.

  13. I'll say again Blogiston, I'm glad you can make jokes about more than 300 people who died on the Belgrano when that vessel was NOT contravening international law!!!!

  14. Jo G: Chill out, fanatic.
I never condoned the Belgrano sinking.
Btw - I thought everyone hated what the MPs were caught doing with the expenses. Surprised that YOU of all people, are defending him since I thought you had principles. That £18000 pounds could have paid a nurses salary (for example) - so I'm assuming that amount of money being wasted on bookshelves for a castle means nothing to you.

  15. Tam is a very dent politician amongst rogues and pygmies.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Blogiston I didn't defend Dalyell on the expenses matter. I responded to you pointing to him as a figure of ridicule because he has never let go of what we did to a foreign vessel that wasn't attacking us and which wasn't breaking any laws either at the time: around 300 people died on Thatcher's orders. Not a giggling matter.

No doubt some find the idea of caring about the truth surrounding Lockerbie a laughing matter too.

    I do indeed have principles.

I am certainly not a fanatical anything.

  17. Megrahi was released after the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Committee (SCCRC) decided that he would get a retrial based upon information on faked evidence and witness tampering in the original trial.

The SCCRC motivated this decision by stating that the facts uncovered raised doubts upon the question whether Megrahi was guilty, and whether he had been granted a fair trial.

A condition attached to Megrahi's released was that he would drop his request for an appeal, which ensured the retrial would never take place.

I'm quite amazed how oblivious the press, mainly in the United States, seems to be about these circumstances.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yes, the SCCRC simply did its job.

It was the reaction to its findings that sent the establishments - political and judicial - into a panic and it was those reactions that brought about the release.

The judiciary delayed hearing the appeal and by his release last year Megrahi had already waited more than two years without the hearing he was legally entitled to. The political establishment showed blind indifference towards the startling fact that we almost certainly convicted the wrong man for the Lockerbie atrocity.

Compassionate release did not require the dropping of the appeal. The circumstances under which that came about as yet remain unknown although theories abound, none of them honourable. Ultimately however it certainly does appear that Megrahi was misled or just plain lied to about the need for the appeal to go. But then, what was his legal representative doing when this was said?

    The questions are endless.
