Lockerbie bomber 'lives longest'

[This is the headline over a report just published on the website of the Belfast Telegraph. It reads in part:]

The Lockerbie bomber has lived longer than other convicted murderers who have been granted compassionate release, it has been disclosed.

Conservative justice spokesman [in the Scottish Parliament] Bill Aitken said that Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi "now surpasses the record for the longest amount of time a convicted murderer has been free after being granted compassionate release".

The Libyan, who has terminal prostate cancer, was controversially released from jail on August 20 last year.

Details published on the Scottish Government website showed 38 prisoners have been granted compassionate release since 1993.

Megrahi has now lived longer than the other convicted murderers who have been freed over this period - prompting fresh calls for Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill to release medical reports on the bomber.

At the same time it was reported Megrahi has been working on a television documentary, which could be released later this year.

[A similar report is to be found on the STV News website. It can be read here.

The issue, as might have been expected, has been picked up by some of Thursday's daily newspapers. The report in The Times can be read here and that in The Sun here.]

August 2009 >>>

    Following only a computer Babylon translation german/english:

    Thank God for a long life of Abdelbaset Al Megrahi. Libya and Mr. Megrahi have, as can be prove, nothing to do with the PanAm 103 tragedy. Dishonor for all those always still the opposite maintain.
    Do not forget:

  2. it's the 20th already, is it? I forgot to prepare my own monthly commemoration.

    Nine months is a long time. I concur the credibility of a three-month prognosis gets thinner and thinner. One wonder what else, if not solid medical advice, would cause that fateful diagnosis?

    We suspect - at least a little - a deal was cut to give Megrahi some extra good time on Earth. In return?

    So I'll just have to refer critics back to my piece from the last 20th, on deals and release.

  3. It's in the Herald too. Looks like stock agency copy to me. No attribution.

    They can only say this because Ronnie Biggs was never convicted of murder.

  4. I hope Megrahi continues to live a long and happy life after suffering such gross injustice at the hands of three obsequious judges, who, there can be little doubt, connocted the verdict.

    Sadly, the contrived release of Megrahi, no doubt with the involvement of our intelligence services, not only saved the arses of the judges but also the exposure of the real murderers.

    If this wasn't on the level (and it could well be absolutely on the level, it's hard to predict how long a terminally ill patient will live), I very much doubt anyone in the criminal justice system was at all well disposed to Megrahi.

    My personal opinion is that any ulterior motive involved using the carrot of release to induce Megrahi to abandon his appeal before the hearings were scheduled to resume last November. If he'd stayed in jail, who knows what revelations we'd have been privy to by now.

  6. MISSION LOCKERBIE:

    To the memory: The Appeal Court in Edinburgh was reported on 20.2.2008, that the Scottish Lord Advocate Elish Angiolini QC had agreed to open the secret text about the electronic MEBO MST-13 timer in the document under "national security" which relieves Libya and its official Mr Megrahi.
    But the UK Government by Advocate General Lord Davidson QC, blocked the progress and has argued that it is not in the public interest to release the secret document. He claimed: "The national security was at stake"!
    Procecuting counsel Ronnie Clancy added that the secret document did not originate from the USA or one of is agencies as the CIA...

    2)> The Libyan government has never accepted responsibility for the Lockerbie-Attempt and has never paid compensation to the Victim Families.
    If Al-Megrahi's conviction was overturned on appeal, the privat International Gaddafi Foundation for Charity Association at Geneve/Switzerland have paid US$ 2.7 billion, that it paid in compensation to the Victim Families.
    Which Oil Company placed the largest part of finances for US$ 2.7 billlion compensation to the Victim Families", over those "Swiss bank for internationally Settlements (BIZ) for the order?...

    3)> The publication of Mr Megrahi's appeal-documents on his internet-webpage >http://www.megrahimystory.net/< for the sake of clearing his name is a clear indice, that the "dropping" of his appeal was NOT based on his free will:

    Why so? / Possible answers:

    4)> Mr Megrahi was not protected to absolutely avoid a legally wrong decision by the present lawyer Tony Kelly;

    5)> Mr Megrahi was possibly set under drugs which resulted in the fact, that his medical ability was out of control;

    6)> Mr Megrahi was intentionable wrongfully informed about his legal possibilities ;

    7)> Mr Megrahi was blackmailed by facts, which have nothing to do with the PanAm 103 attack and were clearly aimed do drop the appeal;

    8)> It would have been the clear duty of the Lord Advocates at the appeal court in Edinburgh, to learn Mr Megrahi, that a dropping of the appeal-issue would not influence the 'compassionate release'!

  7. MISSION LOCKERBIE:

    Is the dropping of the successful promising "Lockerbie appeal invalid and must be set back to the status from 19/20 August, 2009?

    Professor Dr. Hans Koechler, UN Observer during "Lockerbie trial" held in Kamp van Zeist points out a servere error, which was not happening for the first time:

    According to Scottish law, it is NOT necessary that a convicted shall with drawal his demand for reappeal in order to profit from a so called "compassionate release". Such with drawal would have been necessary only, if Mr Adelbaset Al Megrahi would have been returned to his home country on the basis of the agreement between Libya and Great Britain referring to the mutual transfer of prisoners.

    It lacks of any reason, that Mr Megrahi has abandoned his right, that the reappeal-procedure shall continue also in the case of his sudden death. It is well possible, that Mr Megrahi was not informed/consulted correctly during his stay in prison. There is a vital danger, that this fatal error will deeply influence the jurisdiction in the case in question.

    Professor Dr Koechler explained to me personaly, that it is a generaly accepted principle of right, that such decision is only valid, wehn this desicion has been made in full liberty. Professor Koechler has furthermore immediately after the desicion of with drawal was made public asked, that all circumstances, which have lead to this desicion must be 100% cleared-including the role, which was "played" by his (Megrahi's) defense-team!
