Brown claims Lockerbie victory

[This is the headline over a report in today's edition of The Independent on Sunday. It reads as follows:]

Gordon Brown has claimed victory in his battle to persuade Britain's top civil servant that he did not help to secure the release of the man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing.

Sir Gus O'Donnell, who last month retired as Cabinet Secretary after six years, had suggested the last Labour government did "all it could" to to "facilitate" the release of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi. But in an angry exchange of letters, Mr Brown insisted he knew nothing of the plan.

In a final letter, on 21 December, Sir Gus wrote to Mr Brown: "Given your recollection that you, as Prime Minister, did not know of such a policy of facilitation, it is right for me to be clear that I have found nothing in the record to contradict this."

The former PM has welcomed the statement and insisted: "I knew nothing, nor did I initiate or support any attempt to facilitate the Megrahi release."

Facts before Al Megrahi, s questionable release from Greenock Prison in Scotland,on 20 August 09:

1)> Why was for Abdelbaset Al Megrahi for his release, the only correct way, to prove his innocence via the decision of its appeal, bid by the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission (SCCRC) and through the verdict „not guilty“ by the Scottish High Court ?

2)> Why Mr Al Megrahi after a fair release from the prison not wanted to go back to Libya ?

3)> Was Al Megrahi from 1997, along with his friend and chief Ibrahim El Bishari, an opponent against Gadhafi ? And was Gadhafi about it informed ?
Former foreign minister (1990-92) Ibrahim al-Bishari (ESO) dies in a mysterious car crash on 13. Sept. 1997, in Cairo Agypt...
Mr. Abdelbaset al Megrahi alias, Ahmed Khalifa Abdusamad (passport) was in charge of a "security appointement" and was sent by his chief, Ibrahim El Bishari (ESO), under a wrong name to Malta from December 20th to 21st, 1988. But its looks clear, this appointement had nothing to do with the infiltration of a piece of luggage on AirMalta flight KM-180 !
According (Multi) Leaks, El Bishari was also a colleague of Edwin Bollier. El Bishari was buyer of MEBO's radio ship "Radio North Sea International" (RNI) in 1976 (price CHF. 4.9 million). The radio ship was renamed in Libya in El Fatah and was used for special programs.

4)> Did Al Megrahi receive a security guarantee for his person, from ex leader Gadhafi befor its return to Libya, if it withdrew its Appeal ?

5)> Was that a part of the deal between the UK and Gadhafi: Al Megrahi's release in return of the security guarantee for Al Megrahi's person and the withdrew of its appeal ?

The answer hide behind the five questions...
So much can be revealed: Abdelbaset Al Megrahi may therefore can have nothing to do with the real bombing of Pan Am 103 - only inside the "Lockerbie-Affair" ?

  2. "Given your recollection [..] nothing in the record to contradict this."

What a contorted piece of prose. Translation: 'Your party did it, but I can't prove that you as party leader knew of it - although it is wildly improbable that you didn't'. It's the Murdoch Defense, which in turn strangely resembles omertà, the silence of witnesses to Sicilian mafia atrocities: 'I heard nothing, I saw nothing, and if I was there I was asleep'.

  3. Brown’s lack of knowledge may seem improbable, but he was weighed down with affairs of state and may have left the Lockerbie case to the secret service team, that must have been handling the issue over the years.

This could explain why Iain Gray tried to make so much of the release. Would he have done so if he knew the Labour government was behind it?

However Brown’s pride and claim of ignorance can be tested by encouraging him to support the Justice for Megrahi campaign.

Wouldn’t it be better for his record if he presided over the release of an innocent, rather than a guilty man?

  9. I imagine the preceding comment to this one will also be deleted when Prof. Black next logs in. However, there is a question in it to which I believe I know the answer.

The "sophisticated long-delay timer" used in the Brighton bombing was simply a timer cannibalised from a VHS video recorder, so far as I know.

  10. Patrick Haseldine is well aware that he is unwelcome on this blog. I shall remove his above comment (and any future comments) at a time convenient to me.

  11. I've just checked Wikipedia, and the relevant article confirms what I had believed - the timer of the Brighton bomb was cannibalised from a video recorder. It's interesting that Patrick continues to spam his fantasy that it might have been a MEBO product (MEBO do not make video recorders as far as I know), in the light of the ease of finding that information, and even after I pointed it out in the above comment.

  12. Attn. Patrick Haseldine:
I and MEBO Ltd. were never contacted by UK Police because of an MST-13 timers in connection with the IRA and the Mrs Thatcher's /Brighton bombing.
    Forget thus.

  13. I have removed a comment (from someone other than Patrick Haseldine) because it did not relate to Megrahi or Lockerbie. What is it about this post that is attracting dingbats?

  14. I shall delete the above comment from Patrick Haseldine at a time of my choosing. His infantilism is wearisome.

  15. I think Partick's needle's stuck. He's still pasting the exact same post suggesting a MEBO timer was used for the Brighton bomb, not simply after being told that the timer used at Brighton was taken from a video-recorder, but even after the MD of MEBO himself comes along and says it wasn't a MEBO device.

    He's raving. As usual.

The first MEBO MST-13 timer (prototype) was constructed in spring 1985.

  17. This is quite fun, in a perverse sort of way. The thread is going to look quite surreal once Patrick's cut'n'paste of the same nonsense over and over again has been deleted.

  18. sorry: The Brighton bomb blast was 1984 on 12 October ...

  19. My God he's still at it. I suppose it's not much effort just pasting the same drivel in time and time again, and clicking "publish".

Patrick, sweetheart, I've got news for you. Prof. Black is not going to rust first.

(I'm beginning to suspect mental illness here.)

  20. Once I have a fully functioning computer again (probably tomorrow) I shall remove Patrick Haseldine's comments and disable the blog's comment facility. I regard this as deeply regrettable, but I am not prepared to tolerate Patrick Haseldine's ravings on a blog administered by me.

  21. It seems a pity to disable the entire comments section, which so many of us have found so useful, just because of one dingbat. However, it's your blog and you know best.

  22. Gus O'Donnell was the judge who presided over the Liam Fox/Adam Werritty foreign policy inquiry regarding Werritty being Fox's advisor, even though he had not had clearance. Craig Murray showed this inquiry to be another whitewash. They always get legal professionals to sit on these inquiries just before they are about to retire.

The whole legal system in the England and Scotland is a farce. Don't you agree?
