Where, oh where, is the evidence that Gaddafi ordered Lockerbie?

[The following are questions and answers as recorded in House of Commons Hansard for this date in 2012:]

Mr [Denis] MacShane: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what steps he is taking to ensure that the Lord Advocate's letter to the Libyan Government on Lockerbie is acted upon. [98285]
Alistair Burt [Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs]: Our ambassador in Libya has encouraged the Libyan authorities to respond to the Lord Advocate's letter requesting Libyan co-operation with the Lockerbie investigation under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty between the UK and Libya when he handed the letter over to the Libyan Foreign Minister on 21 February. The Government will continue to press the Libyan Transitional Government for a positive and timely response.
Mr MacShane: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will ask the Libyan Government to publish all documents, letters, records of meetings and other material relating to the Lockerbie bombing. [98286]
Alistair Burt: The Government will continue to urge the Libyan Transitional Government to co-operate with the Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary's open investigation into the Lockerbie bombing, including allowing access to information and individuals relevant to their investigation.
[RB: Since the statement in February 2011 by former Libyan Justice Minister Mustafa Abdel-Jalil that Gaddafi personally ordered the Lockerbie bombing, increasingly desperate calls have been made for the Libyan authorities to supply the documentary or other evidence demonstrating this. No evidence has been forthcoming.]

  1. Living with the "Lockerbie Affair" 2015 :

There is no incriminating evidence, because Mr. Abdelbaset al Megrahi and Libya - both had nothing whats ever to do with the PanAm 103" Tragedy in Lockerbie !
The crucial evidence of the MST-13 timer circuit board (PT-35) is a "Scottish Evidence Fraud" against the former Gadhafi regime.
A new forensic examination of the circuit board (PT-35) will show the truth ! Justice for Al-Megrahi and Libya.!

  2. "To hide it" [his ordering of the Lockerbie bombing], "he (Gadhafi) did everything in his power to get al-Megrahi back from Scotland," Abdel-Jalil was quoted as saying."

He wasn't very smart, this Gadaffi, was he?
I mean, here he could have had the SCCRC retrial running with the findings that overwhelmingly shows the absurdity in the Megrahi conviction.
Instead Gadaffi, to hide his own guilt, gets him home in a jiffy, and the trial is cancelled!

Or maybe the statement by Abdel-Jalil is, eh, imprecise?

What to believe in? Damned if I can figure it out!

  3. He was making stuff up as he went along.

If Lockerbie had been a Libyan operation, if it was done by Libyan agents, if Megrahi was indeed involved in the bombing, nobody would have been in the slightest doubt that it was done at Gaddafi's orders. Nobody who believed in Megrahi's guilt was in any doubt that it was done at Gaddafi's orders.

The concept that Megrahi could have been guilty but that Gaddafi wasn't was something that appeared completely out of the blue after Megrahi was released. We started getting all sorts of confused stuff about "did he act alone?" coming from journalists one would have imagined would have known better. What possible motive could Megrahi have had, personally, to blow up a plane? The alleged motivation was always about revenge for the bombing of Benghazi and so on. It was always portrayed as an act of state-sponsored terrorism.

After the fall of Gaddafi everyone in Libya seems to have been lining up to pin on Gaddafi as much of the blame as they possibly could for absolutely everything that ever went wrong in the world. I suspect it may have come as some surprise to Abdel-Jalil that any blame-pinning was required as regards Lockerbie. But he was ready to step into the breach and provide some anyway. So he just asserted it was so, and then made something up. The fact that it was patent nonsense was neither here nor there, it was what the west wanted to hear.
