Why Lockerbie continues to cause controversy
"For anyone who's ever wondered why Lockerbie continues to cause controversy, this is an excellent primer" says @TremendaoNeil on Twitter, referring to Dr M G Kerr's superb Scottish Review article An overview of the Lockerbie case. This article provides the irrefutable answer to those who -- like too many lazy Scottish politicians -- are wont to say "There may have been a few technical flaws in the Megrahi trial and conviction, but what does that matter, since he was clearly guilty anyway." There is now no excuse for such ignorant claptrap.

This is why I'm so concerned by the SCCRC's failure to challenge the Malta-Frankfurt routing of the bomb, followed by Salmond saying that the SCCRC report was comprehensive and can be used to narrow down the areas of concern. The bomb routing is the most important area of the case, more important than that bloody timer fragment, and it's in danger of being overlooked entirely.
ReplyDeleteIf the bomb really did travel on KM180, someone at Luqa airport that morning was responsible for putting it there. Who? Lacking any other evidence connecting him to the bomb (i.e. his having bought the cothes) it cannot be possible to convict Megrahi for merely being there. Nevertheless his presence in these circumstances remains suspicious and anyone might be forgiven for regarding him with a beady eye.
However, if the bomb was never there in the first place, the situation is entirely different. We have to face up to the fact that we convicted a genuinely innocent man. Maybe not a plaster saint, maybe not a paragon of virtue, but in that way maybe not so different from many of us. Just an ordinary person who happened to be born in Libya, getting on with his life as best he could in the circumstances he found himself in. And who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time to enable Bell & co. to fit him up for the crime.
But understanding that requires an understanding of the Luqa evidence and the Frankfurt evidence and the Heathrow evidence. Someone said at Zeist that this wasn't a competition between a Malta loading and a Heathrow loading. Well, I beg to differ. That is exactly what it is. We need to concentrate a few minds on exactly that question - Malta or Heathrow? And show where the weight of evidence lies.
Para. 1.3 of the SCCRC report states; "So far as the procedures at Heathrow, frankfurt and Luqa airports were concerned the application contained very limited submissions. because of this and the substant6ial attention given to these matters at both trial and appeal the commission did not undertake specific enquiries into this aspect of the case."
ReplyDeleteI would note that Mr McKechnie employed the co-author of "Cover-up of Convenience" as a researcher.
My favourite bit so far has been the ESDA tests at page 137-140 although the appendices (containing the examiner's statement haven't been published.)
Although it is hard to grasp this amongst the flannel the imprint of page 51 of Dr Hayes' note on the 12/5/88 was not detected on page 52. Rather it appeared to be a note related to a non-Lockerbie case (PP8922) written on the 17/?/88. (The 12/5/88 was a Friday.)
Did the SCCRC find anything odd about this that required further investigation? Not a bit of it!
