The US State Department has been told that a Libyan man serving a life sentence in Scotland for the 1988 Lockerbie bombing that killed 270 people will be released, CNN reported Wednesday. CNN cited senior State Department officials as saying that Basset al-Megrahi, 57, would be released by Scottish authorities on compassionate grounds. Al-Megrahi has been diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer and was not expected to live through the end of the year.
[The above is the first paragraph of a report on the Earth Times website.]
A mass murderer is about to be released on "compassionate" grounds, and they call this a strong justice system?
ReplyDeleteI won't go public with my thoughts on what should be done with Basset al-Megrahi. I will say only that showing him any compassion whatsoever is a hideous failure of justice.

ReplyDeleteYou are clearly in the throes of a knee-jerk reaction to the simplistic 'facts' the tabloid press choose to publish.
One would have thought that by browsing this blog, of *all* places, you would be able to make a more informed comment.

ReplyDeleteI, too, question the 'strong justice system' - a system that conspired to send a completely innocent man to prison for 27 years.
If the system wants to redeem itself the prosecution and the judges should be charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
