This is the headline over a story in today's Sunday Express. The first few paragraphs read:
'Families of the Lockerbie victims were outraged yesterday after it emerged Libya has been invited to a UK energy summit two days before the 20th anniversary of the atrocity.
'The Foreign Office confirmed the summit will take place, in London, on December 19, as relatives prepare to remember their loved ones.
'Downing Street refused to confirm if Libyan leader Colonel Gadaffi would attend, though it is understood he has been invited as part of the continuing efforts to thaw relations with Tripoli.'
Dr Jim Swire is quoted as describing the timing of the meeting as "highly insensitive".
The only relative who expresses anything that might be described as even approaching "rage" is, of course, Susan Cohen.

Surely if Megrahi had been given a fair trial including full disclosure and judges who pursued justice, he would have been a free man a long time ago and Libya would have been expunged of any involvement.
ReplyDeleteBut it strongly appears the court was working for the UK and USA governments and for any relative to be 'shocked' they must be simple. Governments' concern in people is only when they threaten the governments' agenda. The UK and USA governments would have no hesitation in blowing up one of their citizens or a multitude when necessary.
With respect to the Lockerbie victims Families group (PanAm 103 air-crash).
ReplyDeleteSupported on the realizations of their security services, that Libya and its official Abdelbaset Al Megrahi have nothing to do (PII) with the Lockerbie-Tragedy, Great Briten must have absolutely no inhibitions, to invite Libya's Leader Muammar al-Gaddafi
on 19 December 2008 to London, two days before the 20th anniversary of the Lockerbie atrocity.
It is to be hoped that up to this date the judgement is revised by the High Court in Edinburgh to favour of Libya and Mr.Al Megrahi as miscarriage and Mr. Al Megrahis its freedom gets back.
After MEBO' s investigations (18 years) is clear, free of doubts, the Lockerbie-Tragedy was abused for a conspiracy against Libya …
Apology for my bad english, By Edwin Bollier, MEBO Ltd., Switzerland
Susan Cohen is NOT the only family member who is outraged at Libya and this event.
ReplyDeleteThere are two IMPORTANT aspects to this story:
ReplyDelete1: Distress possibly caused to relatives OR the citizens of Lockerbie and area: there are, I know for certain, some misgivings from several relatives who have spoken to me since the story first appeared some TWO WEEKS ago. The Sunday Express's coverage was certainly lurid and, sadly, as usual sought to sensationalise and 'ramp up' what is basically an 'old' story.
2: There is, I have been told, an OPEC meeting schedule in Europe for the 16th. December (or thereabouts) and the story about Ghadaffi being 'invited' to LOndon stems from the possibility of a follow-up oil-related meeting in London on the 19th.
Whoever 'floated' the idea of an invitation of a meeting in London on the 19th. was either (a) fantastically ignorant of the Lockerbie case or (b) knew of the case and decided that a meeting involving Ghadaffi so near the 20th. anniversary was more important than the feelings and discomfort of many or (c) simply didn't care!
OH YES and (3) whatever happened to the story that Ghadaffi's people were asking for him to pitch one of his multicoloured desert tents in Hyde Park? (I did hear a rumour that the Royal Parks people were having a 'dickie-fit' even at the thought - to say NOTHING of the Diplomatic Protection Squad!)
